Calligrapher, Ceramist
I am a Japanese calligrapher and ceramist.
I have studied calligraphy since childhood and that media has been the main focus of my private shows. In 1990, I had the opportunity to take up pottery. During the following two years, I concentrated on the art of pottery. Then I found myself spontaneously writing letters on earthenware.I did not know until that time, but I have a natural calling for calligraphy.
What I mean is that I feel I was born to write.
Currently, I make TOGAKU (painting or drawing on a clay plate as a canvas). It's a combination of calligraphy and pottery. Of course, I do respect the beauty of pottery inherent in our daily life. I strive to make functional pots after all.
I have been trying various media like Oribe, Kohiki, and Tetsue (drawing with iron oxide) since immersing myself in the world of pottery. My most inspired pottery is ‘Sue-ki’, a major Japanese pottery style that flourished from ancient times through the medieval age and diminished totally afterwards.
My mission is bringing this forgotten ‘Sueki’ pottery back into our present daily life.
How can I resist its delicate, mysterious color hue, its elegant color depth, and its simplicity? Of course, my pottery ‘Sueki’ is myself, my own expression, based on traditional ‘Sueki’.
Struggling with all of the elements: earth, wood, kiln, and fire, I strive to create my own functional ‘Sueki’ pots.
